Imagine a society where everyone can be themselves – regardless of background, belief, gender orientation, or skin color. Where the culture allows for connection and authenticity. Where the economy serves everyone. And the jointly produced pie is distributed fairly.
It might seem like an unreachable ideal. But what if it’s a real possibility? A future you can start contributing to, just as you are, right now?
During the Training the Art of Living Together, you’ll discover how you can make a difference from your unique place in the world. You’ll deepen your understanding of humanity, society, and yourself. And you’ll develop the insight and skills to help build a future rooted in freedom, equality and togetherness.
The Training the Art of Living Together is for anyone who wants to contribute to a humane economy and society — from a place of love and trust. Whether you run a household with a partner, work in a business or organization, lead an initiative or enterprise, are part of a living or working community, or are an engaged citizen — you are warmly welcome.
No prior knowledge is required. You, exactly as you are now, are the starting point. Together, we will explore how you can make a difference from your own unique place.
I offer a rich and dynamic program in which you come to know yourself and the world around you in a new way. Through experiential exercises and experiments, based on the principle as within, so without, you will discover how you are part of a living, ever-changing (social) reality.
You’ll be given the space to explore your personal and professional intentions within this reality, and how to realize them in a way that contributes to social renewal and the transformation of the economy. The program is designed to inspire you not only to discover your unique potential, but to bring it into the world in a meaningful and impactful way.
During the Training the Art of Living Together, you’ll explore how your inner world is connected to the outer (social) reality. You’ll experiment with intuition, clarify your personal and professional goals, and gently deepen your understanding of themes such as freedom, equality, and togetherness; the six keys; money; ownership; initiative-taking; community-building; the exchange and allocation of land, labor and capital and decision-making. You’ll work and learn together on a basis of equality, in a safe atmosphere where everything can be spoken and explored.
The structure is simple:
The course lasts one year to begin with, with the option to continue into a second and third year.
In addition to the daytime sessions, I offer an evening program focused on what we call integration work. This helps you process any deeper resistances that may be in the way of living your inner star.
Finally:
To find out if this course is the right fit for you, I warmly invite you to a one-on-one Zoom conversation. It helps both of us sense clearly whether we’re a good match to embark on this journey together. To make an appointment, email: [email protected]
“Leonie and I had been mulling it over for some time: it didn’t really feel right that we were building up wealth through our private limited companies, while the work was being done collectively by all our colleagues. Squarewise was growing, and you could sense that capital might start putting pressure on our cohesion and sense of shared purpose. That’s why we transformed Squarewise into a steward-owned and self-managing company. Then we came across Economy Transformers — and suddenly everything fell into place, systemically and socially. The role Economy Transformers assigns to capital is pure and inspiring, and it helps us take the next steps. Sometimes capital is necessary to create. We’re in a sector where the capital requirements and risk are relatively low, while the earning potential is high. That’s why we no longer want to hold on to our capital — we want to let it flow to places where earning money is not a given, such as healthcare, education, the arts, and R&D. Entrepreneurship is creation. And the experience of that is the true reward for being an entrepreneur.” – Marcel Heskes, Entrepreneur
The Training the Art of Living Together is a profound journey of discovery — together with your fellow participants you explore how you, as an individual with your unique qualities and inner strength, can contribute to a humane and Earth-worthy society as a whole.
Guided by the six keys, you will learn to:
I Am: Discover your personal essence and inner motivations, and learn to navigate your life through intuition and creativity. You will learn to live your own inner star and activate your full potential.
Value: Understand what you have to give, and how your capacities serve real needs — for yourself and for others. You will develop a healthy balance between giving and receiving.
Ownership: Take ownership of your experiences, insights, and the choices you make. You will explore your relationship with land, labor, and capital, and how to care for these in connection with humanity and the Earth.
Organization: Organize collaboration in an equal and natural way. You will learn to shape power, voice, and decision-making based on love and trust.
Relationship: Build responsible and authentic relationships — with yourself, with others, and with the world. You will develop communication that deepens trust and strengthens connection.
Earth: Align your actions with the natural cycles and boundaries of the Earth. You will learn to live and work in harmony with the reality of nature and contribute to a sustainable and inclusive world.
This training not only helps you understand these six keys — it helps you live them. You will grow into a Practitioner of the Art of Living Together: someone who, from love and trust, embodies and realizes both personal and societal renewal.
Listed below are the four scenarios, based on what is in Free, Equal & Together and The Fourth Scenario is described:
The capitalist scenario (First Scenario)
The socialist scenario (Second Scenario)
The mixed scenario (Third Scenario)
The free scenario (Fourth Scenario)
With these four scenarios, The Fourth Scenario a clear contrast between existing social systems and a forward-looking, regenerative approach.
Here is a brief explanation of the six keys from Free, Equal & Together By Damaris Matthijsen:
I am – Living from your essence
Value – Value creation independent of financial compulsion
Property – Land, labour and capital at the service of the whole
Organisation – Cooperation based on equality
Relationship – Connection based on trust and openness
Earth – Cooperation with nature instead of exploitation
Together, these six keys form a framework for building a just, sustainable and humane society. They help both individuals and communities to live consciously and in harmony with themselves, others and the Earth.
When the six keys are not applied consciously and in connection, they create shadow keys. These can be divided into two main patterns:
Fear (Shadow of ‘I am’)
Hatred (Shadow of ‘Value’)
Doubt (Shadow of ‘Property’)
Dynamics:
When fear, hatred and doubt rule man too much, it creates three false strategies as ways of dealing with them. These shadows disfigure our relationship to Earth, relationship and organisation.
False surrender (Shadow of ‘Earth’)
False power (Shadow of ‘Relationship’)
False hope (Shadow of ‘Organisation’)
The key to transformation lies in awareness and taking responsibility:
By applying the six keys consciously and in connection, a human- and Earth-worthy society can emerge.
The Course on the art of living together guides you on a profound journey of discovery into how you as a human being, with your unique qualities and inner strength, can contribute to a human- and Earth-worthy society. This requires not only developing the six keys, but also seeing through and transforming the shadow keys that can keep you from doing so.
Through these six keys, you will learn:
The Cohabitation Art Course helps you not only understand the six keys, but also live them, by actively working on seeing through and transforming the shadows that can block them.
You grow into a Collaborative Life Artist: someone who with love and trust embodies and realises not only personal but also social innovation.
The Friday-Group: September 25 2026, October 2, November 27, December 4, January 29 2027, Februari 5, March 19, April 2, May 28 and June 4.
The Sunday-Group: September 27 2026, October 4, November 29, December 6, January 31 2027, Februari 7, March 21, April 4, May 30 and June 6.
The determination of the price is part of the process. That is, from the very first session, we begin by exploring a healthy balance between giving and receiving. How much does a full year of studying The Art of Living Together in this location, facilitated by this trainer, truly cost? What is each person’s contribution to the whole?
During the process of finding the right price, we deepen our awareness of what money actually is, and we uncover our (limiting) beliefs and (destructive) emotions around money. Our aim is to arrive together at a balanced whole: each person contributes what they can (including the trainer), while ensuring that the whole is cared for.
The training will begin with a minimum of twelve participants, six in each group. A maximum of 24 people can join—twelve in each group.
Once again, the purpose of the pricing process is to find a healthy balance between giving and receiving, so that the training not only becomes possible, but can also grow and evolve over time.
Jac Hielema is not your typical trainer. He’s a writer, teacher, thinker, and craftsman of culture — someone who has walked many paths and dared to return to the questions that matter most: What is a truly human society? What does it mean to live from within? How do we organize life, work, and community in a way that honors both the Earth and the soul?
Jac’s own life is a living experiment in these questions. He stepped out of the conventional world of work and economics to create new forms of learning, living, and organizing — rooted in love, trust, freedom, and responsibility. He is a peer of Economy Transformers, School for the Art of Living Together in the Netherlands, co-developed the “The Four Scenario’s”, the “Six Keys”-framework, and has guided initiatives and people in reclaiming their own inner compass.
As a trainer, Jac combines deep clarity with radical gentleness. He listens with precision, speaks from essence, and offers frameworks that help you ground your intuition in action. His teaching is both poetic and practical — grounded in lived experience, and always connected to the larger question of how we live together on this Earth.
If you’re looking for someone who doesn’t just teach new ideas but lives them — patiently, honestly, and with a spark of rebellion — Jac is that kind of guide. And he’ll walk with you, not ahead of you.
We’ll then schedule a (zoom) conversation in which you can ask all your questions. This conversation is a chance to get to know one another and to explore whether we want to walk this path together.
If by around late August 2026 enough people have expressed a clear commitment, the Training the Art of Living Together will begin.
If by that time not enough people have expressed a commitment, but are interested, I plan to come to Ireland to offer a few weekend seminars as an introduction to this work. (Please note: these seminars are not a replacement for the full training—they are simply a gateway.)
Economy Transformers Academy is CRKBO-registered. This means we meet quality requirements in the field of short vocational education.
Our registration guarantees that we act carefully, reliably and transparently, and that our courses match the needs of our participants. To the right, we explain the quality requirements step by step, so you can get an idea of the journey to and through the Cohabitation Art Course 😉
And you have the books Free, Equal & Together of Damaris Matthijsen and The Fourth Scenario by Jac Hielema and listened to all the podcasts already. Then you can sign up for a meeting night Economy Transformers comes to you or an Orientation Day Learning Walk Together. To get to know the teachers' working methods and potential fellow participants.
You are welcome to bring yourself in with any questions and answers you may have. You can always contact Jac Hielema, see: contact.
Then make an appointment with Jac Hielema for a one-to-one intake interview.
During that meeting, we will get to know each other better and discuss the Commitment you will be emailed in advance, see: Commitment.
During the interview, Jac Hielema asks if you are willing to meet the participation conditions, article 24. But more on that later.
First things first:
During the Samenlevenskunst Leergang, you will learn about the so-called Six Keys to Transition, among other things. Apart from the fact that you can set your own learning objectives each year, which the teachers align their lessons to, there are also general learning objectives of the Living Together Course. These are them using those six keys:
General learning objective of the Living Together Course
The Samenlevenskunst course guides you on a profound voyage of discovery into how you as a human being, with your unique qualities and inner strength, can contribute to a human and Earth-worthy society. Through the six keys you will learn:
The Course helps you not only understand these six keys, but also live them. You grow into a Collaborative Life Artist: someone who embodies and realises both personal and social renewal from love and trust.
Prior knowledge in any field is not necessary. The starting point every time is the person as he or she is here and now, including her/his thoughts and feelings, in the reality as it is here and now. No more and no less. However, each participant is asked to meet the following conditions:
These are the participant conditions:
Participant declares that he/she:
a. is willing to reflect on his/her own thinking and actions,
b. feel a desire to get one or more ideals clear and realise them alone or with others,
c. be willing to form a safe bed with fellow participants in which everything can be explored, discussed, questioned, named and done that is necessary to realise the above goals.
Participant should be familiar with the complaints procedure:
The complaints procedure can be found here: complaints mechanism. And is based on the premise: we will work it out together and otherwise find someone we both trust and ask her/him to act as mediator.
Participant may rely on the confidentiality clause:
Everything that is discussed during the intake interview, lessons, interim talks, talks during exercises and the evaluation interview may be shared with third parties. It is hereby expressly requested to speak with integrity and discretion about all involved and situations.
The teachers and assistants lovingly and carefully exchange their observations and experiences with and about the participants. This is done with the aim of gaining an ever better understanding of each participant's learning needs and capacities, so that guidance can be best tailored to them.
How do we together ensure a safe atmosphere during lessons?
During classes, and in fact at every Economy Transformers meeting, we adhere to the following guidelines:
Safety guidelines for the Living Together Course:
1. I am
2. Value
3. Property
4. Organisation
5. Relationship
6. Earth
Lock
We are aware that perfection does not exist and that we will sometimes deviate from these guidelines. We do not see this as a failure, but as an opportunity to learn and practice forgiveness, both for ourselves and for each other. Together, we work to create a safe and inspiring environment where everyone can come into their own.
During the intake interview, we also discuss the price. In the first year, Everyone can choose between three prices. And if the right price is not among them, we can make other arrangements.
The creation of the second- and third-year awards is part of the process.
You can pay the price for the Course in one, two or three instalments.
We can also agree another payment arrangement on the spot. However, we do strive to strike the right balance between give and take.
During the 2025/2026 school year, Damaris Matthijsen and Jac Hielema will be delivering a Samenlevenskunst (Art of Living Together) course for the tenth year. In other words, they have been delivering for ten consecutive years without interruption. They take full responsibility for the quality of the course. There is regular evaluation, formal and informal. All criticism, tips, questions, comments and proposals are taken seriously and taken into account in the further development of the Course in the Art of Living Together. However, decisions are made by Jac and Damaris, who will always substantiate and explain them if required.
Even if, after the intake interview, you are not yet sure whether you want to step in and join, you can at least participate in the first meeting. After the first meeting, we ask you to make a decision. So that at the second meeting we will have formed a permanent group in which we will do the year.
Of course, anyone can always decide to drop out anyway for all kinds of reasons. Up to and including the fifth meeting, you will receive a partial refund of the tuition fee.
Do you have any questions or want to share anything else? You can do so by emailing Jac Hielema: [email protected] or to call him: 06-14687873
Kind regards,
Damaris & Jac
All the information we provide is always truthful and accurate. Should you have any questions or wish to share anything, you can always call or email. Before you register for the Living Together Course, we recommend you do the orientation day. If you are considering joining, we will also do an intake interview. You can always call or e-mail or make an appointment for a personal talk during the course. Everything we discuss always remains between us.
All lecturers live what they teach, so they are experts by experience in their field and, moreover, they are always approachable.
Before, during and after the Life Art Together course, it is clear what teachers and participants can expect from each other. There are intake interviews, interim interviews and evaluation interviews. If anything is unclear, you can always call or e-mail.
If you click on this link, you will find an example of a Commitment for the Learning to Live Together Course: Commitment.
The teachers stand by the quality of their lessons and are accountable for it. Participants get out what they put in. If teachers feel that participants are not putting in enough, they will be lovingly addressed. Teachers and participants walk a path together in connection with themselves, each other and the whole.
The aim of all Economy Transformers' courses and trainings is to provide tools for participants to help themselves blossom socially to make the whole more beautiful, better, truer. Everyone helps each other in this process. Life itself is the examiner. Because we observe each other during the process, we will motivate, encourage, stand by each other in time. As Economy Transformers, we will never test or examine. However, we do ask participants to regularly present their development.
